Houseboat

This page includes some of the words, thoughts, poems and books that inspired me to write Saffron Fields apart from people, places, experiences and songs

Please feel free to share your own thoughts, poems, songs or queries on this page. Or it can be used to simply chat as well. This can be our poems, books, songs, thoughts, anything club and that little houseboat on Dal Lake above our cozy hideaway. Kehwa anybody? Coffee, tea, hot chocolate? Anything more interesting? 😊

Aashiqui sabr talab aur tamanna betaab ,
Dil ka kya rang karoon, khoon-e-jigar hone tak.

Hamne maana ki tagaful na karoge lekin,
Khaak ho jaayenge hum tumko khabar hone tak.

~Mirza Ghalib.

Hearts united in pain and sorrow
will not be separated by joy and happiness.
Bonds that are woven in sadness
are stronger than the ties of joy and pleasure.
Love that is washed by tears
will remain eternally pure and faithful.

~Kahlil Gibran, Love Letters in the Sand: The Love Poems of Khalil Gibran

“Thus with my lips have I denounced you, while my heart, bleeding within me, called you tender names.
It was love lashed by its own self that spoke. It was pride half slain that fluttered in the dust. It was my hunger for your love that raged from the housetop, while my own love, kneeling in silence, prayed your forgiveness.”

~ Kahlil Gibran, The Forerunner: His Parables and Poems

We travel, some of us forever, to seek other states, other lives, other souls.

  1. Underneath the mango tree
Me honey and me can watch for the moon
    Underneath the mango tree
Me honey and me make boolooloop soon…

    Underneath the moonlit sky
Me honey and I can sit hand in hand
    Underneath the moonlit sky
Me honey and I can make fairyland…

  2. I think this verse is next in the ghazal that you mentioned of Ghalib…

Aah ko chahiye ek umr asar hone tak…
Kaun jeeta hai teri zulf ke sar hone tak!

Coincidentally I shared this verse with a friend very recently. Something that I have been humming…

Si ke lab aik qiyamat si utha di jaaye…
Reh ke khamosh zara dhoom macha di jaaye…

    By Faiz Ahmad Faiz.

    Love and regards,
    Sam

  3. For now a few words from Kahlil Gibran.

I AM FOREVER walking upon these shores,
Betwixt the sand and the foam,
The high tide will erase my foot-prints,
And the wind will blow away the foam.
But the sea and the shore will remain Forever…

  5. “Both Sides Now” Joni Mitchell

Bows and flows of angel hair and ice cream castles in the air
and feather canyons everywhere, I’ve looked at clouds that way.
But now they only block the sun, they rain and snow on everyone.
So many things I would have done but clouds got in my way.

I’ve looked at clouds from both sides now,
from up and down, and still somehow
    it’s cloud illusions I recall.
I really don’t know clouds at all.

Moons and Junes and ferris wheels, the dizzy dancing way that you feel
as every fairy tale comes real; I’ve looked at love that way.
But now it’s just another show. You leave ’em laughing when you go
and if you care, don’t let them know, don’t give yourself away.

I’ve looked at love from both sides now,
from give and take, and still somehow
    it’s love’s illusions that I recall.
I really don’t know love at all.

Tears and fears and feeling proud, to say “I love you” right out loud,
dreams and schemes and circus crowds, I’ve looked at life that way.
But now old friends are acting strange, they shake their heads, they say
    I’ve changed.
Something’s lost but something’s gained in living every day.

I’ve looked at life from both sides now,
from win and lose, and still somehow
    it’s life’s illusions I recall.
I really don’t know life at all.

  6. In the glowing evenings embedded within pearl sands of my Utopian lands and the skies dazzling with the beauty of a thousand melodic rainbows, feeling your tender touch, hearing your luring voice, merged with your silhouette, I am moved and lead by your strong unseen hand to explore on the great graceful oceans of life with immortal passion, fair and wild…in the sunset of golden romance… ~ Oksana Rus

      1. ❤ Thank you Jen.
Appreciate you recalling that verse by Kahlil Gibran. I can never forget it. Here it is, along with an image of a drawing titled "Love" by him as well. ❤

        The verse….

  8. ❤ Was at a small celebration earlier and this was played….it'll make you dance and hum…. 😘
Including translation for the Italian stanzas. 🙂

away away come away from here
nothing binds you to this place anymore
    not even these blue flowers
away away not even this grey weather
full of music and of men that you liked

away away come away with me
    enter into this dark love
don’t miss, for anything in the world,
the multimedia show of someone in love with you

away away come away with me
enter into this dark love full of men …
away, come in and have a hot bath
    there’s a blue bathrobe,
outside a cold world is raining …

      1. Jen, Back then, my comments were with few words and now I remember a little more clearly, the dinner, jalebees, gift was a red saree and me saying “Khushi doesn’t wear sarees, a dress would have been better”….words to that affect and viola there was a lovely mention in the following chapter.
I have come a long way as a reader since then and along the way you have always….always maintained your grace with all your readers. Always!! Love, hugs and muahs. 😆 ❤

      1. ❤ No worries. I will make my comment about it when I get to that chapter when I start re-reading ALS. Lots of love dear friend. I am actually re-reading about Yuvraj Arnav and his Khushi. Such sweet childhood sweeties. 😆

  11. “Why shouldn’t we celebrate our beautiful love…revel in it…flaunt it…in front of the whole world? And most importantly, why shouldn’t we do something that will make you happy?” – that is Arnav in a nut shell for me! Amazing how preseptive he is to all that is his Khushi.

    1. ❤ You said it Jen!!!! There were many instances in the movie that reflected so many moments from ATU. The movie was enjoyable, but I didn't like it as much as the earlier ones. There were things I liked and things I didn't like. The regular cast is superb along with Idris, but the "antagonist" element, I felt was weak. Beastie Boys, thumbs down, but Rihanna's Sledgehammer was awesome and fitting (also fitting for ATU 😀 😉 ). Me too missed our Federation Friends. 😥

It has been pretty warm, but starting Friday evening it has started to be cool. Sunday night was actually cold. Will not think of winter just yet.

  13. Caught up with SS. Feels good. Looking forward to Chapter 5.
Trying to memorize and improve my enunciation of the words in the beautiful song for Chapter 4.
Aap ki aakhon mein kuchh meheke hue se raaz hain,
Aap se bhi khoobsoorat aap ke andaaz hain

    Just dreamy!!!

  15. Jen I came across this chat now. Lovely. I am not into western songs but the words of some are beautiful. Somehow Indian songs hit you with both music and words. Aur woh Zahan mein pauchtey Hain.have you heard “dil diyan gallan “ from Tiger Zinda Hain”.”this song one can hear on a loop.and the classic Ghalib,s Aah Ko Chahiye .In in the earlier promos of Tanhaiyan this was a monologue by Haidar. Actually humney maana tagaful ne karenge lekin kaun jeeta Hain tere zulf key sar hone tak” were the words recited. Why do directors miss out the depth of Barun Sobti when he is intense.””
Thank you for introducing me to Khalil Gibran.
And identifying with others some lovely songs like yeh moh moh ke and jeena jeena
